Is tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring important?

Is tongue-and-groove hardwood flooring important?

Yes, and it’s the only one used to install solid hardwood flooring. This type of installation serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose.

Planks, protrusions, and slots

Every plank has both a protrusion and a slot. When joined together, they form a mat with very tight seams. This mat is then hammered down.

It enhances the beauty of these floors because it becomes one smooth entity. In addition, since the seams are so taut, there is a decreased need for nailing; that also helps with safety since no one needs to worry about stepping on nails (or tripping over them) or bare feet on the wood flooring.

It helps with some common water/wood challenges. For example, wood shrinks or expands to adjust to weather; tight seams eliminate some movement.

What else should I know about solid wood installations?

Water is enemy #1. The process begins before installation with acclimation; it gives the wood's moisture levels a chance to align with their new environment.

During installation, there will be constant moisture readings. This should begin on the subfloor, as problems can affect the surface floor.

Cement subfloors need special adjustments. Please discuss this with the hardwood flooring company.

Does engineered hardwood require the traditional tongue and groove?

No. Engineered floors can be glued, nailed, or installed to float.

A floating floor has a click-and-lock mechanism, similar to the tongue and groove action. The pieces form a mat, and it hovers over the subfloor without adhesives or nailing.

Any subfloor is acceptable as long as it's clean, dry, and level.
